RECAP: TEXAS UNITED DEFEATS FC CLEBURNE IN FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON
Grand Prairie, TX - Texas United, led by new coach Arez Ardalani, hosted FC Cleburne for the first game of the regular season on Thursday, May 17th in the AirHogs Stadium. The match resulted in a 5-0 win over the visiting team.
The match kicked off at 7:00 p.m. and was fast-paced from the very beginning. After settling into a rhythm with lengthy spells of possession, forward Julio Vargas opened the 2018 scoring account with a well-placed shot in the 34th minute.
Just before the halftime whistle, defender Steven Pate was able to double the lead in the 44th minute. Though the game was minutes away from the break, Texas United continued the attack on goal, nearly putting another one in the net before the whistle blew. The official halftime score read 2-0 in favor of Texas United.
The second half began just as the first half did, with Texas United seeing most of the ball throughout the early minutes of the half. After three substitutions, Dominick Hernandez’s shot in the 72nd minute extended the lead to 3-0 over the visitors.
Only two minutes had passed before Texas United grabbed the fourth goal of the night. In the 74th minute, Julio Vargas netted his second goal of the night thanks to a perfectly placed pass from Patricio Garcia. Not long after, Ardalani made the fourth substitution of the night when he replaced goal keeper Ben Hale with Patrick Hillyard in the 78th minute.
The final substitutions of the match took place in the 81st and 83rd minute when Javier Leija replaced goalscorer Dominick Hernandez and Alex Egeounu replaced Jorge Barrientos.
In the closing minutes of the match, FC Cleburne conceded an own goal to make the score Texas United-5 and FC Cleburne-0 at the final whistle.
Texas United faces three away games in a row and will travel to the first away one of the season versus Energy on May 20th. The team will return to AirHogs Stadium on June 4th versus Corpus Christi FC.
