Texas United v. Mississippi Brilla FC Game Recap

Texas United FC roll past Mississippi Brilla to open 2023 campaign Luis Sahmkow’s hat-trick leads United to 5-1 victory

Texas United FC kicked off the 202 USL League 2 season with a bang on Saturday night against the visiting Mississippi Brilla FC.

While Mike Azira’s Mississippi Brilla held much of the possession in the first half, they had nothing to show for in the attack. Rarely penetrating the United defense, Brilla created only a few chances. Their best chance coming from a misplaced pass along the United backline forced goalkeeper Seth Wilson to make a reaction-save with his right foot.

It was an even game in the early offing, but a goal in the 20th minute from forward Luis Sahmkow put United ahead 1-0. Perhaps against the run of play, but head coach Dave Jacobs was delighted. As the half was winding down, Dominik Kurija picked Sahmkow for his second goal of the day. A cross from the left flank found Sahmkow, who tapped it across the goal, securing his first half brace.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Sahmkow finished off his hat-trick. Midfielder Timothy Mason found an on running Bailey Sparks, who squared it across the face of goal to an awaiting Sahmkow for an easy tap-in.

Six minutes later, Sergio Ors Navarro got in on the action. The midfielder curled a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the goal to put Texas United ahead 4-0. Unfortunately, Mississippi Brilla snatched a goal back courtesy of Chase Gwynn, but an outside the foot shot from Maycol Reyes capped off what was a tremendous 5-1 performance in Plano.

Texas United FC picked up a massive three points to start the season, and will travel to Louisiana to take on LA Krewe on May 27.
